Man Charged After Police Investigate 30-year-old Sexual Assault Incident

Release Date: February 7, 2018

17-38468

A 73-year-old Ottawa man has been arrested after the Kingston Police Sexual Assault Unit began investigating him for sexual assaults that occurred over 30 years ago.

The investigation began in November 2017 when the victim came forward to report incidents that occurred between 1985 and 1986. During that time the victim was under the age of 10 and had been recruited by the accused to join their Kingston church choir. For approximately one year the victim received private singing lessons from the accused, during which time he was sexually assaulted. In the summer of 1986 the victim attended a choir camp with the accused, during which time the accused exposed himself to the victim and sexually assaulted him.

On February 2, 2018 the accused turned himself in at police headquarters. The accused was arrested and later released on conditions with a future court date.

The accused was charged with gross indecency, and two counts of sexual assault.

Kingston Police want to let victims of sexual assault know that it is their choice to disclose the incident to police. If you have been sexually assaulted or abused and are uncertain what to do, please attend the hospital and see the caring and compassionate staff at the Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence clinic (SADV). The staff can help you with counselling and coping strategies in addition to providing testing for sexually transmitted diseases and providing access to HIV medication. If you are willing the staff will also complete the sexual assault evidence kit. Evidence can be collected up to twelve days following a sexual assault. Depending on the circumstances it may be possible for DNA evidence to be obtained from clothing after it has been washed. Your confidentiality is guaranteed and police will only be contacted by the hospital if you request it at the time. The SADV clinic will store the contents of the kit for a preliminary period of 6 months which offers a victim time to gather information on the process and decide on how they want to proceed.  Please do not hesitate to reach out to Kingston Police or any of these other valuable support services and resources for victims of sexual or domestic violence in the Kingston area:
